Choosing, Using, And Caring For Your Water Filter
Choosing, Using, And Caring For Your Water Filter
There are several important things to consider when purchasing a water filter. First, be aware that there is a difference between a water filter and a water purifier. While both filters and purifiers remove bacteria from water particles using a mechanical pumping process, only a purifier can render viruses inactive using either additional chemical (such as iodine) or electrostatic means. While most water in North America is believed to be free of viruses, if you are traveling or living outside the U.S. you should definitely consider a purifier over a simple filter. Next be sure to find a filter or purifier with an absolute pore size of 0.2 microns to eliminate as much bacteria as possible. You will also come across several different filter mediums such as ceramic, ceramic with a carbon core, fiberglass, structure matrix, and iodine resin. Ceramic elements are the longest lasting and easily cleanable but can be fragile and require careful handling. If the taste of purifying chemicals is upsetting, you may want to consider a ceramic cartridge with a carbon core to filter out the taste. Fiberglass components are as effective as ceramic, but typically do not last as long. When you are cleaning your filter, don’t forget you are handling a contaminated source. Always remember to wash your hands before handling food and putting your hands to your mouth. If possible, pump a weak water and bleach solution through your filter. Always remember to allow your unit to dry completely before storing or using it again.
